Nina faresin-Be a magpie

Faresin has been in the fashion business for 35 years, before the industry transitioned to digital she would work solely on paper. After graduating in the 1980s after doing a fashion bachelors, she recalled her first job in fashion being very fast paced and difficult to keep up with, you would be asked to to always work ahead of schedule by multiple seasons. She emphasised the importance of keeping work integrity, and being as observation as possible during your first years in the industry. Work ethic always prevails over 'talent', especially in a work environment that requires team cooperation.

Faresin would have to write up projects called 'trend forecasting', we all take in trends subconsciously, whether we like it or not, it’s not avoidable. And are consistently changing, depending on what’s happening in the world, the biggest things are geopolitics & technology.

Macro trends (bigger trends) like health and fitness, and how technology influences. People want and know how to be more healthy in this day and age. Micro-tends, could be some type of gossip or trending event that took place (will smith smacking someone on stage). It’s not very predictable.

There’s a huge group of data analysts to help predict what will influence fashion and design. Drivers (global events)> leaders (scientists, visionary)> interpreters (designers)> Followers (the general public) Seeing what’s trending at the moment, gives a good indication of what’s happening politically, for example, what people are wearing reflects the economical state of that region/ country.

This is why it’s best to step away from social media sometimes, and find credible sources to help predict the next trend. Keep asking important questions, do things you’ve never done before, (people watch, go take a train somewhere).

And always be aware that you don’t actually know anything. Take mini notes when you are out, so that you understand and can remember what you were thinking/ feeling. Trying to make sense of the information you are collecting.

Be a willing collaborator
