'Unmasked' to the level film festival project- Live Brief

Duration of Project: 1 Week

Role In Project: Lead Designer, Typography, Illustrator

My Film Poster for ‘Unmasked’

This live brief instructed me to create a piece that would help to promote the up coming film festival held in Nottingham, which premiered their student's short productions and entries for the film festivals. The final outcome for Unmasked took me 6 hours to complete after doing client research.

After reviewing the film I had decided to take a psychedelic interpretation of the production. In the film the protagonist is hiding behind a mask, as the film follows the narrative of a girl who is Autistic, and only preforms behind a mask to avoid over sensory problems due to large crowd watching her on stage.

The Image with the Typography or border

After I finished drawing the piece, I transferred the composition over to Photoshop to insert a border and the relevant information for the client. I decided to do a combined typography style, one font had a taper in the connective between it's characters, this was the font 'Milkalte', and it was used for the To the Level Film Festival. I wanted to add another texture in the title to pull the arrangement together in the same colour theme, I had blended a light pink with a darker pink within the lines of the characters using a clipping mask. The date and the title was written in 'Typographic' font, this served a purpose of the main information being as clear and bold as possible for the viewer to understand the title of the film.

When finding ideas and references for the piece I found an artist called Michael Eddington, who sells and creates make shift film posters using the psychedelic style and inserts of vintage actors and actresses, using the photomontage style and psychedelic colours to make a a finished product that resembles a real film poster.

''THIS IS NOT NEW PSYCHEDELIC MOVIE POSTER', by Michael Eddington

When looking at my design, my interpretation was probably too experimental for the client, I had fun with being creative in the approach but in future it would be best to adhere to the same emotional response of the overall theme of the production. My approach focused too much on the emotion behind the protagonist's fear of facing the crowd, and made that fear appear like a monster to the protagonist. This however, gave the wrong impression of the film's genre, which lies in a 'feel good' genre rather than a horror film. As well as the incorrect mood for the theme of the film, the placement of the borders and main illustration could have been more centred with the title being placed underneath instead to the side. Placing the typography at the bottom of the page to make it more well balanced as common film posters are done, as seen below.
