'Just a Bad Trip''-To the level- Live brief
Project Duration: 1 Week
Role in Project: Lead Designer
Another requested submission for the To The Level Nottingham film festival is this production called Just a Bad Trip. This short animated film features a psychology disturbed protagonist that is experiencing horrifying images in their own home, as though they are under the influence.
The category lies under the ‘horror’ film division, in order to adhere to it’s tone, I created a poster that features a women sitting down within a colour scheme of psychedelic themes as she misses features of her face.
My Final edit for ‘Just a Bad Trip’ Film Poster
Going with the 60s style of font that takes from the same time period that psychedelic posters and art were most popular. I chose a psychedelic colour theme, as the story line and title suggest the use of drugs as the main issue with the protagonist. Psychedelia is often known to fall under the ‘horror’ category in films, just as it is in the film below called ‘Acid Eaters’, this was my thought process when designing the artwork.

Film poster created by Christophe Van Hoeyland
On the design for Just a Bad Trip, I had tried to create a poster where the title of the film position away from the centre of the page, and insert in the top left corner. Van Hoeyland had use this composition in his poster, but instead made the typography playful enough for the audience to catch it’s attention, this is something that could have added to my design, as the title doesn’t catch the viewer’s eye as fast as it should, almost being something easily missed by the viewer despite that being one of the most important piece of information for the film. Just a Bad Trip is a film being created by a producer who is not yet known in industry, and that fact should have been taken into consideration was creating the design. For some films, you may be able to get away with there being no direct title, as it’s popularity could make some ionic features instantly recognisable by the viewer. For this project, that isn’t the case, and the goal of the poster is to give a glimpse into what movie entails. Trying to make the artwork too experimental and far from the actual artwork of the animation left the final outcome incohesive with the movie.
